This book shows how life was as a teenager during World War II. As you read Gold's wonderful descriptions, you can picture scenes of the terrifying camps with people passing away every day. Readers can really put themselves in Hannah or Anne's shoes. Gold describes their lives and emotions very well. This book is impossible to put down. It is a little sad, so I wouldn't recommend this to people who don't like reading about melancholy situations. Overall, I think this is a great book.

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery

Do you have a friend who is talkative, wildly
imaginative, and sometimes performs crazy stunts? At the same time, is
this friend very loving and affectionate? Then you have a friend like
Anne Shirley. Anne, an imaginative orphan, is adopted by Marilla and
Matthew Cuthbert who live in Avonlea on Prince Edward island, Canada
during the 1800's. Anne cries when Marilla says she is not wanted
because she needed a boy to help with farmwork. Matthew, however, loves
Anne's company, even though he dreads women except his sister, Marilla.
After a discussion, the Cuthberts decide to keep her. Anne loves Avonlea
because of the beautiful landscape which sparks her vivid imagination.
There many beautiful sights that have dull names so Anne renames them.
For example, she renames Barry's Pond "The Lake of Shining Waters".
Also, Anne usually frolics with her new "kindred spirit" Diana. The only
thing Anne truly hates about Avonlea is Gilbert Blythe. Despite liking
Anne, he calls her "Carrots" because of her red-orange hair. Anne has
many adventures in Avonlea. One time she saves Diana's sister Minnie May
from the deadly croup. Another time Anne dyes her hair green by mistake,
and breaks her ankle when she walks on a ridge pole. Even though Anne
did weird things, she is one of the smartest pupils in school. Will Anne
find a kindred spirit in Marilla? Will she ever forgive Gilbert Blythe
for calling her Carrots? Anne of Green Gables is an excellent fictional
story. Anne is a fun character. Even though she lost her parents and was
raised by many mean and selfish foster families, she does not let this
sadness from stopping her from being an imaginative and loving person.
